We have a look at the four full-frame mirrorless mounts to see how their lineups and technologies currently compare. I'd rather have this than the Leica based on IQ, features, & tilting LCD . We find that, especially in a camera with an advanced autofocus system and no direct autofocus point controls, it would be helpful for a good amount of users. DxO PhotoLab 4.0 launched in October. Not one. It looks like optical resolution of the lens on RX1R II is may be only 15-20 megapixels. It's just unecessary/neutral. If I look at the dog in full resolution it looks like a bad ISO400 film back in the nineties. But its real issues are: fragility, too small size and battery. Just reread your comments, carefully. Interestingly, the previous model X100T was the one to introduce phase detect AF, yet it didn't deliver a significant improvement. Otherwise DXO Mark clearly indicates Sony does not have native E-mount lenses with resolution to match 42 megapixel sensor. You people who live in temperate climates can all go jump in a lake. Maybe I am a little defensive, but the lack of clarity in your A7Rii shot seems quite inconsistent with the incredible clarity I get, daily, with mine, hand held, though admittedly I don't have side by side compare shots. Use the remote shutter release and the result will be some very serious, high-resolution photos. If you really need or want such a camera you'll be willing to pay more, and manufacturers will make them for you. I liked the results: https://500px.com/photo/181230029/looking-up-by-ivo-de-man-?ctx_page=2&from=user&user_id=16043137, But no doubts about it, the X100F is also a jewel, and the photographer's skill will always be much more important than the camera used :). What is with the $600 price jump?? It was $3200 a few months ago. Sony is behind the competition on this front and we are yet to see if G Master line up will or will not finally catch up with the competition. This is your chance to have a say in which of this year's products was the best. If I had to base my image quality decisions based on whichever camera manufacturer had the best JPEGs, I would be a very sad person. Tiny body, 35mm lens. F8? The RX1-series cameras have terrible manual focus controls. Pixel amount set to 18m can reduce blur, memory-processing time? We are yet to see proper test for new 42 megapixel successor. In this article, Jordan reviews the winners and provides more detail on why they were selected. You shoud try it!You could also try Fuji X100F, that now has 24mp (allowing some crop) and have a better iso performance than GR. Again, no question the Sony delivers fantastic image quality. The point being that Sony do not consider the shutter on the a7R to be good enough to give it a year's warranty, which you'd normally expect. Despite mine being outside the affected serial number range. That is not its strength. I would not like to see them replace tactile electro-mechanical controls. Camera shake remains exactly the same, it's only more noticeable if you zoom in to 100% on a 42MP compared to 100% with 24MP, for obvious reasons. Sony's roots lie in making small products, and that has served them well. As sensor size increases the improvement in IQ is not a 1:1 ratio but get's less and less. Between the go oning evolution of the RX100 and a7-series’, Sony is on a big roll when it comes to small tech. RX1R II does not resolve what the sensor resolves since none of E-mount lenses do that and RX1R II clearly has worse lens. In such a tiny body you can't have a power supply for 1000 and more shoots like in a EOS - DSLR. I was surprised as anyone when I found that. Yes it has some field curvature, so not ideal for shots of brick walls but normal landscape images shot with this camera are stunning in richness of detail, I'd say on par with Leica S with 45mm lens. Man.. Read more, Late last year we asked you to vote on the outstanding products of 2015. I have been using the RX1R quite a lot for long exposure shots (with 10 and 15 stops ND filters...). Other systems might have CA correction on by default and you might not even realize. I have the A7Rii as well. Or a monopod hiking stick. So often DPR makes claims that are untrue. I have no problem with the battery life, take 2 or 3 more with you, and all is fine. The daguerreotype was the first commercially viable photographic process when it was introduced to the world in 1839. Like 7RII vs RX1RII vs RX100IV. When you look at that way, just compare it all the other 42MP BSI full-frame camera bodies that fit into a jacket pocket that you can find on the market for $2000. It's just way too much money for what it is. Since you like to quote DXO so much I will leave you with this. For A7R II that means larger camera with full grip. It just so happens that Sony is currently ahead of the pack. Just reread your comments, carefully. With no opportunity to handle one, can you let me know please? Because if this camera is 'ultracompact', then what should RX100 ( which is much smaller camera) then be? If you want a small FF camera your going to have to compromise somewhere. Measurements are not. Never even thought that would be a problem after reading about how fast the focusing is. NO. We talk about a tool here - camera. You my well be missing the whole idea of a dedicated lens on a small body. Thx to Utterlyotter. 20 megapixel optical resolution is close enough for 24 megapixel camera and not much of a loss. I guess somebody had to do it. @miksto:poor optics... lol ;-))The RX1R and RX1RII festure the same lens which is class leading, stunning and ultra-sharp even wide open and has very nice contrast and bokeh. My RX100 for instance has never had a firmware update issued I know of but then it really didn't need one. While competition has plenty of lenses that are of equal or higher resolution than the best of Sony. But this is not reality! If you look at miksto´s posting history you´ll see that all he does is whine about and come up with clearly exaggerated statements regarding all things Sony. Infra means 'below'. I've taken shots I would have expected IS to struggle with and it's produced better results than I would have expected. I've seen little evidence of this. P.S. and you still replied the same way I wastrying to avoid. If you are paying $3300, Sony can definitely add the thumb grip. The Fuji, incidentally, lets you shoot at up to 1/4000 second using its leaf shutter, with flash sync across the entire range. So many things said and you still don't admit that's just about your peculiar (and unflexible) style of doing the thing... not representing street photography in general.Of course electronic shutter has the sensor readout time (which creates the "distortion" you're talking about). text in color palletes) in studio comparison too to see how bad it is as center looks closer to A7R II than corners. I'd rather have an RX100IV which is smaller. "If only Sony had made the battery door removable, allowing for a small external grip to improve ergonomics as well as accompany a larger battery. Sony’s latest ‘full-frame’ compact camera features a higher-resolution sensor, improved autofocusing, Wi-Fi with NFC, a pop-up EVF and a tilting monitor. Your experience goes against others', so either you're doing something wrong, or there's something wrong with your camera. I think the problem is the resolution of the sensor.42MP is just a bit too demanding of shot discipline to be able shoot it in a run and gun method. The. Mhmm.. How many here even know this fact? That lens was only resolving 20 megapixels which is within my guessed range of 15-20 megapixel optical resolution. For RX1R II that would mean smaller resolution but the same sensor technology (should help low light as well). You don't need a heavy tripod. I had the chance to try out the Sony RX1R II last week while I was in New York. None I suspect, thus my mentioning here is to raise awareness that Sony gear is not all it should be and woe betide you should your gear break, and are then by circumstance, forced delve a little deeper - you might not like what you find. Is the manual focusing ring intuitive? The point about using a tripod, puts focus on a very real issue about this camera: The reason you get a camera this small is to avoid bulk. This means that when focusing, the entire lens appears to be driven back and forth, in contrast to most ILC lenses, where a single or smaller group of elements handles focusing duties. Never even thought that would be a problem after reading about how fast the focusing is. I made it clear why if you bothered to read me conjecturing. Is there any issue with the camera that you feel requires a firmware update? MFT is half-frame. :), >> This came right from your boys on the RX1Rii. What's the best camera for travel? Nor its a big problem. It is razor sharp on the 42.4 megapixel sensor! Not for everyone but I'm glad I exist in a mad universe where things like this can happen. Yes, i saw the raws and indeed that noise is from editing, much too much shadows lifting. I am not 100% sure, but is A7R is using a regular shutter, whereas RX1RII is using in-lens leaf-shutter? is that the case on this or even other similar Sony products? I assume manual focusing using the scales on the manual ring would work, though they seem to be pretty spares of info. Otherwise DXO Mark clearly indicates Sony does not have native E-mount lenses with resolution to match 42 megapixel sensor. It's noticeably slower (and noisier) than say the 35mm F2.8 on the A7r II but at least it doesn't close down the IRIS in APS-C mode, like both the A6300 and A7r II do.The MF experience is bad. They do not test optical resolution and other optical qualities at all. But this is not reality! I fix them and resell them, they are almost always defective, they were all unreliable. It certainly has NOTHING to do with the IQ horror on the DPreview's test scene of the RX1-R a couple years ago & again now of the RX1-RII. I wonder if DPR could possibly clarify. In this article, Jordan reviews the winners and provides more detail on why they were selected. (apparently many people here only understand things if we explain in the most literal way).I'm not even that experienced and I can still shoot many kinds of photographs with DSLR, mirrorless, compacts, phones, film, pinhole..But now it's clear that you're unable to adapt your style. I'd rather have the Q, because it has real manual focussing with the ability to zone focus and because of this, it is a better street camera. You have no glue! On the other hand, the old Teac decks almost always work fine, possibly needing a belt or two. I can't see how it can't. Silent mode is passable on the street with the A7s because of the small resolution.I shot with one and a 35mm F2.8 for over a year.Silent mode is useless on the A6300/A6500, because of the larger resolution and finer pixel density. It is even worse on the A7r II because of the larger sensor.Jim Kasson wrote a good article on this, you should check it out.Basically anything moving in the plane of the sensor will create horrible distortion, so unless you are shooting stationary targets, silent mode is not much use. The Sony Cyber-shot RX1R II is a full-frame, 42MP succinct camera with a fixed 35mm F2 lens. I'd rather have this than the Leica based on IQ, features, & tilting LCD . If you need a tripod, what's the point? The Sonnar lens holds up to 42mp, and the new CODEC's for video are very good, too. Kind of strange to see that in a review. Which would to some degree (not the presets, obviously) be mitigated by a touch screen. Complaints are subjective. Does the RX1R II Mark II have a 'silent shooting' mode? Thanks, Since it has a leaf shutter it doesn't need a silent mode. Kind of strange to see that in a review. Please let me know where this adjustment can be found. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find a camera with better low light image quality. In an apparent effort to avoid cannibalizing their DSLR business, they have been producing sub-optimal pro-sumer cameras for many years with slow lenses and poor autofocus. By the way I have Sony A7R II (RX1R II) and frankly am not happy with it on quite a few rather mundane angles including lack of good lens line up to match the competition. Batteries are cheap and small. The luxurious Cyber-shot RX1R II is Sony’s over-the-top camera. Chris and Jordan reveal their picks for the best and worst camera gear of 2020 while playing their newest drinking game. It will still show noticeably poorer resolution than you can get with the same sensor on A7R II with a good lens.Flat or not flat... the problem is with poor quality optics and the scene will not change that. We've updated our 'best cameras for travel' buying guide for those looking for a camera to bring on their next adventure, once it's safe to do so. If you do then there are only two reasons you could come up with a statement like "poor optics". If you go that route, buy the extra grip? ?? It's something like your tripod needs to be twice the weight of your camera? Sony is behind the competition on this front and we are yet to see if G Master line up will or will not finally catch up with the competition. Good travel cameras should be small, versatile, and offer good image quality. For some more preliminary impressions of the RX1R II, check out Barney's Gear of the Year article, and the accompanying video below. I've just spent a week shooting with mine while trekking in the mountains - lovely landscape shots, with plenty of resolution and superb colours. ...just as an addendum to my last remark, I actually sold all my Nikon D800 gear in advance of buying this, because, I had grown very tired and bored of carrying around heavy and conspicuous DSLR gear! Everybody gets what the want. If you are paying $3300 for this, then you can definitely add $249 for the TGA-1 thumb grip. With the exception of the fiddly AF-mode switch, the RX1R II's dials are well-damped and offer enough positive feedback to let you use them with your eye to the finder. They probably weren't mentioned because this isn't an A7R review. In every other respect they suck. Thank you RX1R2... " it seems that even for $249, you can't really get what you want or what you need. If you want to take pictures of wallpaper, it's not the camera for you. That's a 60% reduction in size. If it were deigned as it should be done, properly, then people would suddenly wake up from hallucinations of the mirrorless smokehouse. You are missing the point mermaidkiller. "If you took a pole today of cameras used by serious, published, street photographers, I don't think you'll find the RX1r II very high on the list. So now I use the RX1R ii for max quality, and a Nikon 1 V3 for any zoomy stuff I do! Does the RX1R II Mark II have a 'silent shooting' mode? Thanks, Since it has a leaf shutter it doesn't need a silent mode. They do not test optical resolution and other optical qualities at all. I'm going to have to save my pennies for this beauty! It's a flat scene. I've found that on very cold days, after the battery says it's exhausted, taking the batter out and holding it in my hand for a while to warm up lets me get a few more shots. I'll stick to my Ricoh and EM1 for now. But because the camera is so light you can use one of the smaller carbon fiber tripods like a baby Gitzo and a lighter ball or gear head from someone like Kirk or RRS. Vote now to have your say on which was best. Really, didn't realize one is a fixed lens and one is not. "Is there any issue with the camera that you feel requires a firmware update?". The successor to the 24MP RX1R, the Mark II inherits a lot of technology from Sony’s flagship a7R II mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Sony's quality control must be really awful if every reviewer except you gets a bad one! @RawphotoIt's not that fast to focus, because it essentially moves all the lens elements in and out. Also remember that even A7R II does not yet have any native mount lenses (let us hope G Master line be such) that match the sensor resolution. @EvilTed Thanks for that info, really useful. That isn't to say that it doesn't feel well-built - it's lightweight, but feels dense, and the metal body has a high degree of fit and finish. It's not a camera for just anyone. miksto - sounds to me like you didn't do your research up front. Simply sublime image quality. I think infracompact. Find out if it'll make your life easier in our detailed review. What isn't obvious (to me) from the scene comparison tool is which setting was used for the anti-aliasing filter. This is a miniature MF class camera what you use to make large prints. I wonder if that's the cause of the softness. If they put a Fiat engine in a Hummer and charged BMW 7 money the owners would probably use a Canon 5DS to take pics of it.. ;), the 3 year old canon 6d ff and 3y/o d600/d610 with small primes are a much better option. Sorry, but there is nothing exaggerated in plain facts. And did you miss the original RX1? This is just not technical enough. Many photographers love fixed prime lens shooting, and, a camera of this kind forces you to familiarise yourself with the aspect ratio/ field of view of the lens. It's noticeably slower (and noisier) than say the 35mm F2.8 on the A7r II but at least it doesn't close down the IRIS in APS-C mode, like both the A6300 and A7r II do.The MF experience is bad. Yes it has some field curvature, so not ideal for shots of brick walls but normal landscape images shot with this camera are stunning in richness of detail, I'd say on par with Leica S with 45mm lens. Sensor size and heat/statics aside, I suspect the external tubular action of the smaller cams w/zoom (every time the camera is switched on/off, plus at every zoom) could more easily suck dust into the sensor compartment, making the RX100 and LX100 more prone to dust problems than the - more rubustly built and sealed - RX1 or Q. Just don't get why some people despise the Sony menu system so much, given that it's structurally no different than Canon or Nikon, just less intuitively tabbed. Hardly the most important aspect of a camera, especially considering things like battery life are in the same list. The most useful function of a touchscreen, when using a mobile-camera. Overall performance is mixed. Would be awesome if DPR could provide some sort of a clarification on this.. lets not keep our hopes to high though, haha:). First of all do you even own the RX!Rii? I would kill for an X100F with a lens like that on the Leica Q - mechanical focusing ring with distance and depth of field markers, with a stop at “A” to engage autofocus. It's overpriced.Sorry, my comment was not clear enough. No. If you can live with the 35mm lens limitation and have enough expendable funds to afford the price for what is in reality a second camera then go for it. More sharp keepers than I ever would have expected. A lot of it depends on the processing. Simply daft. It weighs less than 500 grams and is built like a tank, the lens is gorgeous, it has every function and mode of an A7R ii bar the interchangeable lenses, but that is also its appeal. Does anyone else worry about sensor dust? So whats up with this? So, just keep shotting with the GR and be happy. But the doesn't mean the new cameras aren't great for that purpose.Other exemple: nowadays there are many cameras that could be great for photojournalism, but most "experienced" photojournalists still prefer to use cameras like 1DmkIV/ 1Dx. Zooms are great. I'm currently trying to get the A6300 to work, but finding small, wide lenses that actually bring out the best of the sensor is hard.My current favorite is the Loxia 21mm F2.8, which I'm shooting zone-focussed @ F8 1/500s and it seems to be working. Again, its all depends upon your style and how you make images.Resolution is not important in street photography.Being discrete and shooting while moving is (at least to me). Some street photographers wait for people to enter their scene.Others like me are more dynamic and just shoot with the flow. And that’s when I think one should factor in the cameras’ other qualities which impact usability (battery life, ergonomics, etc.). First introduced in June 2013, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R is a 24.0MP Large Sensor Compact camera with a Full frame (35.8 x 23.9 mm ) sized CMOS sensor and 35 mm F2.0 lens. ;). @EvilTed Thanks for that info, really useful. Pro tip: we've found that keeping the camera in C-AF yields noticeably swifter autofocus performance. The EVF is excellent, better than anticipated. @Camley, yes I think it would be more troubling in a smaller sensor, but a larger sensor has more area to catch dust. Personally, I've stayed away from most tiny things, but just the other day, I sent my vintage Sony Walkman(CD player) from the 1980's to the thrift store. Some days ago I bought this camera, the RX-1 R II.It's a great camera with fascinating image quality. Or you may just be trolling i guess that could be a third option.Would you agree in this day and age people are more likely to bitch about something online than take the time to praise it?So if you go with this premise take a look a B&H for just one example. It just so happens that Sony is currently ahead of the pack. No. Updated Lens availability is a critical part of choosing a camera system. And if that weren't an option, I'd be looking at Fuji. No, controlled lab tests are exactly that.CONTROLLED. >> Show me all the complaints on the web about the "poor optics"? DPR repeat this statement a few times. These first real-world examples, captured on an unnamed Qualcomm-powered smartphone, show what the CAI standard experience is like when viewing the images online. Miksto: I love a good debate but I am losing interest because you are clearly just trolling and really not very good at it. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R II Review. That said, when doing street photography it’s probably best to rely more on zone focusing, using a fixed manual focus and aperture setting to guarantee everything from a few feet to infinity will appear in focus. Answer is obvious: heat issue, weak battery issue, crippled design issue. An RX100 has about 2 stops better low-light image quality and dynamic range compared to a top-end smartphone, and has 25% higher resolution. Images are uncorrectable and thus unusable. Con you shoot sports with this camera? Does this camera have any image stabilization? Then if you want to use it "one handed" and shoot from the hit it's just not the camera for you (ricoh sure, or your basic Iphone). Your "hate" Nikon for their poor live view implementation? The focusing is not really linear, more like software-controlled exponential to movement type. I yearn for a camera that I can operate with minimal effort, so I can focus my attention instead on my subject. Better option for who and for what? Resolution is not so important for street photography. Some nice comparisons may be between the top cameras from every range. The resolution was shocking. For us, a good part of the appeal of a carry-everywhere camera starts to wane when you must fill your pockets with spare batteries to get through a weekend's worth of shooting (not to mention 'battery anxiety' when you see a bar drop). Ultra means 'beyond' so, what 'beyond compact' means? Isn't smartphone image quality 90% as good as an RX100's by the same token? I'm not sure that's a super compelling argument. I am amazed at the amount of praise I see all over the place for Sony cameras in light of all their infuriating drawbacks. Now, let's get to the full spec sheet of the RX1R II. This way everyone will know what camera to buy according to their needs. DSC-RX1 / DSC-RX1R. Between the continuing evolution of the RX100 and a7-series, Sony is on a big roll when it comes to small tech. Processors double in power every two years, but i bet you could use an upgrade right now. If you are on the fence, and tend toward 35mm, just buy one. Sure, it gives you the option to control myriad functions and settings, but doing so is so unintuitive and inefficient that I suspect most RX1R II owners rarely take advantage of all that control. How about that absurdly convoluted menu system, or the fact that the custom presets don't preserve all settings such as focus position?
