MIDF presents its contribution to MERCY Malaysia’s Türkiye-Syria 2023 Earthquake Response Fund

MERCY Malaysia held a cheque presentation ceremony on the 4th of April 2023 for its Türkiye-Syria 2023 Earthquake Response funding appeal at Berjaya Times Square Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The ceremony was officiated by YB Steven Sim, Deputy Finance Minister on behalf of Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Ahmad Farouk Mohamed, Executive Vice President and Head of GMD’s Office presented MIDF’s contribution of RM50,000 to the fund on behalf of the Group to YB Steven Sim, which was witnessed by Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, President of MERCY Malaysia. Cik Irmawati Mahamad Tahir and En Mohammad Saufi Hj Husain of Group Strategic Communications also attended the ceremony on behalf of MIDF.

MERCY Malaysia is continuing the Türkiye-Syria 2023 Earthquake Response Fund Appeal to provide much-needed humanitarian assistance to those affected by the devastating earthquake that occurred on 6 February 2023 and the aftershocks that followed.

To date, MERCY Malaysia has raised 22% of its targeted RM22 million needed to provide relevant and timely humanitarian aid for the Emergency and Recovery phases through public and corporate contributions.

MERCY Malaysia has developed a holistic Emergency and Early Recovery Response Plan focused on immediate action plan encompassing four (4) components namely:

  1. Access to Healthcare Support.
  2. Emergency Shelter, Food and Non-Food Items Support.
  3. Emergency Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (eWASH) Support; and
  4. Psychosocial Support and Protection

MERCY Malaysia’s response in the emergency phase will be for a period of three (3) months; starting from March until May 2023 which aims to cover current needs including access to health services support (mainly in Syria) and provision of daily basic needs like food and non-food items (in Türkiye & Syria).

Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faizal thanked all donors for their contributions on behalf of MERCY Malaysia while YB Steven Sim congratulated MERCY Malaysia for being Asia’s first NGO to be a verified Emergency Medical Team (EMT) by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The EMTs form a significant part of the global health workforce, providing extra surge capacity and expertise to countries in response to disasters and health emergencies.
